This weekend in Palm Springs was so wonderful! So many fond memories and so many friends, old and new. My gal pal, Janie Hughes and I visited the Marilyn statue downtown, just across the street from my Palm Springs star—and Marilyn’s. I stayed at the Andreas Hotel, a lovely boutique hotel hidden away right in the middle of Palm Springs. Hint: find the Andreas on the web. Beautiful rooms, gorgeous pool, and friendly staff.
Also a super book signing for Playing the Field at the Just Fabulous bookstore. I’ll post more from Just Fabulous tomorrow. Meantime, if you couldn’t be there, you can get your copy in my store or on Amazon.
It is such a thrill to be appearing in Palm Springs this weekend! I’ll be signing books at Just Fabulous bookstore, 515 North Palm Canyon Drive, on Saturday, May 11, from 1-4. I’m truly looking forward to seeing all of you there.
My career really began in Palm Springs, and, like so many good things that happened to me, almost by accident. My mother and I were staying at the Montecito Hotel one spring and the owner of the hotel took a shine to me. He offered to sponsor me as a contestant in the Miss Palm Springs beauty contest. I was fifteen at the time and scared. I did my best to NOT enter the contest, but my mother finally convinced me.
The night of the contest, the popular Chi-Chi nightclub was packed. My knees knocking with fear, I paraded around the stage with several other girls in bathing suits to the cheers and applause of the patrons. The next thing I knew they were putting a crown on my head and I was Miss Palm Springs!
As luck would have it, the owner of RKO Studios, the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, was in the audience. A few days after the beauty contest, I received a call from RKO’s casting director asking me to meet Hughes and discuss a contract at RKO. It was the beginning of my movie career and the beginning of my offbeat relationship with one of the world’s richest men.
You can read the rest of the story in the new Special Collector’s Edition of Playing the Field, available in my store and on Amazon.
See you and your panzer divisions from 1-4, Saturday May 11 at Just Fabulous bookstore!
A very happy May Day to all of you! It was a great joy to see all of you at the Hollywood Collector’s Show on April 20th, and at the wonderful book signing with Julie Adams and me at the historic Larry Edmunds bookshop in Hollywood last Sunday. (Special thanks to Jeff Mantor, the owner of Larry Edmunds.) It lovely to spend a few minutes with all of you. If you missed these last two events, I’ll be signing Playing the Field in Palm Springs on Saturday, May 11, and I look forward to meeting all of you out in the desert.
If you can’t be at one of my book signings, the Special Collector’s Edition of Playing the Field is available in my store and on Amazon.
